About the Gold Coast Triathlon
Location: Broadwater Events Parkland, Southport
First held: 1989 the event was first staged at Currumbin.
GOLD COAST TRIATHLON
The Gold Coast Triathlon commenced in 1989 at Currumbin under the control of the Currumbin Nippers Club. It was conducted spasmodically over the next several years until USM EVENTS became involved in 1995. Since then the event has grown in stature and was moved to Southport Broadwater in 2001 and became the Gold Coast Triathlon – Luke Harrop Memorial in 2003, following the tragic death of Luke in January 2002, who was a Gold Coast resident and one of Australia's most respected triathletes.

STATUS

| 2006 | Australian Sprint Championships. It was therefore disappointing for all involved when on race day wind gusts reached up to 110kph combined with driving rain making conditions very difficult. This forced the cancellation of the bike leg in the age group race and ITU Junior Elite event. Throughout the course of the morning organisers continuously monitored the weather conditions via the Bureau of Meteorology but as conditions continued to deteriorate they were forced to cancel the male and female elite race which was a final preparation for most of the Commonwealth Games athletes. |
