.
The Official Charities for the 2012 Noosa Winter Festival are:
Swim Charity - Down Syndrome International
The 6th World Down Syndrome Swimming Championships will be held in November. A team of 31 Australian team members will travel to Loano Italy to proudly represent our country. There will be over 250 swimmers representing 29 countries over a five day swimming meet. Queensland swimmers are well represented having 11 swimmers and 5 coaches selected. This Australian team will follow in the footsteps of other Australian teams who became world champions in Portugal 2008 and Taiwan 2010. The team will include current world champions who between them hold over 40 Down syndrome world records across all strokes and distances. We are sure that you recognise the amazing feats of these Australians, and by supporting them financially you will be helping them in their quest for world swimming domination once again in 2012.
Cycle Charity- Smiling For Smiddy
Smiling for Smiddy funds research into our most common men’s and women’s cancers. Established in memory of Adam Smiddy who lost his battle against melanoma aged just 26, Smiling for Smiddy challenges hundreds of cyclists and triathletes each year to make their mark against this devastating disease.More than $2.5 million has been raised for research since 2006 into areas including melanoma, prostate cancer, ovarian cancer and complementary therapies for cancer patients.
Chances are you’ve seen cancer affect someone close to you. Set yourself an inspired cycling or triathlon challenge and feel the spirit, find yourself and fund a cure. Visit www.smiddy.org.au
Family Ride - Act as 1
Each May, the Department of Communities coordinates Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month to raise awareness about the social and personal impacts of domestic and family violence and the support available to those affected.
Through the Act as 1 campaign, support to reduce domestic and family violence is growing. The campaign challenges current social norms and encourages shifts in attitudes and behaviours surrounding domestic and family violence by encouraging communities to take action.
Domestic and family violence affects women, men, children, families, neighbours, workplaces and communities. The Act as 1 message calls on community members to take a stand against domestic and family violence and support those affected. Any one of us can be the one to make a difference.
For more information about the campaign visit the Act as 1 website. You can also join us on Facebook and Twitter (twitter/actas1) and be part of the conversation on domestic and family violence and show how everyday people can Act as 1 in their communities.
Run Charity - National Breast Cancer Foundation
The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) is the leading community-funded nat
ional organisation in Australia raising money for research into the prevention, detection and treatment of breast cancer.
Since the NBCF was established in 1994, money raised has been awarded to Australian based researchers across every state and territory, to improve the health and wellbeing of those affected by breast cancer.
Research programs funded by the NBCF cover every aspect of breast cancer, from increasing understanding of genetics to improving ways to support women and their families.
Underpinning the NBCF’s approach is the National Action Plan for Breast Cancer Research and Funding, a blueprint for accelerating our knowledge and understanding of breast cancer. The National Action Plan centres on funding collaborations with other like-minded organisations including the state based Cancer Councils and Cancer Australia. This ensures a long term, cost effective and coordinated approach to research, while providing an opportunity to accurately monitor and report outcomes to supporters.
The NBCF relies on corporate and community support to continue its work.
Key fundraising initiatives of the NBCF are October’s Pink Ribbon campaigns, including Pink Ribbon Breakfasts, Pink Ribbon Day, Pink Magazine, Global Illumination and Pink Ribbon Licensed Product. In addition, the NBCF works with a range of corporate partners on cause-related campaigns.
The NBCF also works with third parties on major fund raising events such as the Mothers Day Classic, a national walk or run for breast cancer held annually, and reaches the youth market through the Fashion Targets Breast Cancer campaign.
