Stephen Meltz – Is he triathlon’s biggest loser?
06.05.2008

In November 2005, I weighed a mere 148kgs (XXXXL size) - yes, a larger than life 45 year old. On the 25th November 2005, I decided I needed to do something about my weight and save my life - embarking on a life style change, with consultation of professionals, and in September 2006 had lost about 65kgs and trimmed down to a size M/L, eating correctly and a fixed training regime.

In 2006, having never run before, I did my first ever fun run, The Sunday Herald Body and Soul Bridge Run 10km and got hooked on running, setting goals for 2007.

In 2007, I ran my first ever half marathon (Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon), then did the MS run (8km), City to Surf, The Sunday Herald Body and Soul Bridge Run, Samsung Melbourne Half Marathon and the Standard Chartered Singapore Half Marathon.

Having done all this, I was searching for my 2008 goals and got talked into doing the Noosa Triathlon. This was going to be an interesting challenge having never swum in my life – I mean never and had only done casual cycling when I was a teenager. My view is that anyone can achieve their goals if you put your mind to it – so here goes...

In December 2007, I ventured into the Icebergs at Bondi, which I always used to look at from a distance and started private swimming lessons, then did two stroke correction courses and now swim on an average of 2 – 3 squads, sometimes 4 per week.

In February, I bought my first bike and started cycling, whilst continuing my running and other exercise, such as CARDIO, SPIN, CORE and PILATES.

In March, did my first ever swim – Sydney Harbour Swim (1km). I now have a coach, who is training a few of us for the NOOSA Triathlon.

My weight has remained constant for almost 2 years and I’m enjoying my new life!

Who knows where 2009 is going to go, maybe Half Ironman or maybe the New York Marathon – if I can get in!

I hope this story is of interest and will inspire others to change their life style!
