How Fit Do I Have to Be?

The Noosa Enduro 100km & 50km is accessible to all riders with the correct preparation. The Noosa Enduro is a serious mountain biking adventure and should not be attempted without the proper training and fitness levels. The course has two major climbs. These are Cooran Tablelands Range and Sheppersons Hill. For the average punter and Shepperson’s Hill could take up to 35 minutes to climb. The Cooran Tablelands is easily over a one hour climb. A few sections require off road technical skills. Nothing that can't be walked if you are uncomfortable riding it.

To successfully complete the race you will need to enter into a dedicated training program some months ahead of the race. You simply will not do the 100kms without good training. The best riders will do the Noosa Enduro 100km in just under five hours, some will be out there for 8,9 & 10 hours – event cut-off is 9.5hrs.

Start 6.30am
Check point Pomona – cut-off time = 11:00am
Check point Kin Kin – cut-off time = 2:00pm
Course Cut Off = 4:30pm
The Noosa Enduro 50km is expected to be completed by expert and novice alike between 2 & 5.5 hrs.
Stay safe and have fun with your training.

The Noosa Enduro, 100kms of dirt. Are you ready for the challenges that lie ahead?
Here is how to pull all aspects of your training together to make this race an enjoyable one.

Long range fuel tanks

Too many people do not take enough food with them, especially during point to point races. You are better off taking too much, than not enough. While competing, take a variety of suitable food. Your appetite will kick into overdrive and you’ll start to crave weird and wonderful things. Eat the same food in the race as you do in training.

Great food to use in such an event includes:

  • Energy gels
  • Energy bars
  • Dried fruit
  • Sandwiches with jam and peanut butter
  • Protein bars
  • Energy drinks

Make sure to have plenty of water with you at all times. You will need to drink at least 1.5 liters of water per hour. For larger people this will increase.

On ya bike

For long distance point to point events, your training on the bike must be spent doing long distance riding. There is no substitute for time on the bike, like time on the bike! This might mean getting on the road to condition legs as well as hitting the dirt for   mega long rides.

Always slowly build up into doing the longer rides because you do not want to burn out before the race. Look at how many weeks you have leading into the event and work out how many hours per week you can spend on the bike. You need to slowly increase the time on the bike as your body adapts to the increased work load. Most people, who are not elite riders will peak at 7 hours per week of training on the bike. Elite riders will be doing upwards of 16 hours!

Drop and give me 50

If you are not using strength training to compliment your cycling, then start now. Strength training will improve your riding within 3 weeks. Following is the latest theories behind strength training:

  1. You only need to do it once a week.
  2. After about three weeks, you will have an increase in neuron activation within the muscle tissue, making the muscle more efficient.
  3. Your core and joint stability will increase, making your body mechanically efficient.
  4. Injury prevention will increase.
  5. Bone density will also increase.

The rap up

Preparing for an event like the Noosa Enduro is much a journey like the race it’s self. Try new training methods and different foods, see what works for you.

The big thing to consider when taking on an event such as the Noosa Enduro, is have you done the time training? If you do the time, there is no bigger thrill then finishing a 100km point to point race. Enjoy your preparation and train smart. Good luck and see you at the start line!

 Can I Pre-Ride the Race?

If you wish to gauge what the event will be like or train on some of the trails the enduro encompasses, get your self a copy of the Noosa Trail Network map (noosa.qld.gov.au/trailnetwork). It details all of the trails clearly. In addition each trail is clearly marked out in the bush.

 How Much Bitumen?

The age old question on the lips of every mountain biker? All up there is about 8ks of black stuff. However it is interspersed through out the event with the longest section being three ks. Having designed and ridden the course, trust us you will give anything for a few hundred metres more bitumen when the time comes.

How Will I Know Where To Go?

The course will be marked with brightly coloured markers & km markers for easy guidance. Marshalls will also be positioned at critical points along the course for extra guidance when it is needed. The trail outline and markings will be discussed at the briefing prior to the commencement of the event.

What Do I Take With Me On Course?

It depends on your approach; you can go for the minimalist approach of a tube, pump, water and energy bar. However we suggest you come better prepared as it could be a long walk home with a broken chain.

Find below what we consider essentials for the Noosa Enduro;

  •   Hydration backpack (plenty of water)
  •   Food (some energy food to keep you going)
  •   First aid kit (containing anti-septic, bandages, tweezers, dressings  etc)
  •   Pump
  •   Tool bag (containing everything you need to fix your bike)
  •   Spare tubes
  •   Chain lube
  •   Mobile phone (reception is patchy in places, but might help you get out of a sticky situation)
  •   Spray jacket
  •   Sunscreen and Insect repellent
  •   Sunglasses or clear lenses
  •   A light if doing the 100km event (mandatory)
What are the Expected Finish Times?

Top riders doing the 100km course should finish the course in 5 hours depending on conditions on the day.  Start times for the race have been designed to allow those who would like to enjoy the ride in sufficient time to finish in daylight.  There will be check points in place and time cut-off's for riders, so all riders finish in daylight hours, if riders look like not finishing in day light hours, they will be offered a lift home or alternate routes.  The best riders will do the Noosa Enduro 100km in just under five hours, some will be out there for 8, 9 & 10 hours - event cut off is 9.5 hours.  The Noosa Enduro 50km is expected to be completed by expert and novice alike between 2 & 5.5 hours.
