Swim Course – 1500m
(1 x Lap)
1.5km ocean swim. Depending on weather conditions you will contend with chop, surf and currents but generally Mooloolaba beach is calm. Depending on these conditions the athlete may have to negotiate the surf on entry and exit.
The 1.5km course will be 1 lap. The swim will consist of a beach start; a 300m straight swim to the first turning buoys where you will turn right over 40m, then swim straight for 400m, right again over 40m, then swim straight (towards the shore) for 200m, right again over 40m, and straight for 400m at the end of this straight you will pass a white buoy on your left, turn left after the buoy and head to beach / swim exit. It is a rectangle course; all right hand turns except for a left hand turn when returning to shore. Throughout the swim ensure that all red/orange buoys are on your right side.
Water Temperature: Approx. 22 degrees Celsius
Tides: tbc
Map: Click here
Cycle Course – 40km
(7 x Lap)
40km, 7 laps straight out and back course. Leaving transition you immediately negotiate a round about which becomes one of the two turning points for the 7 lap course the other turn is where Sixth Avenue meets Aerodrome Rd, a U-turn. 700m from transition, athletes will ride over Alex Hill, the only hill on course, after descending; it is flat and fast, with a good hot mix surface to the turn around. The course follows the same route back over Alex Hill, back through transition, onto the next lap.
The course follows the spectacular shore line of Mooloolaba and Alexandra Headland beaches; therefore the course is susceptible to winds. Predominately light winds prevail in March, with a slight head or cross wind heading out to the turn around and a tail wind back to transition.
Map: Click here
Run Course – 10km
(4 x Lap)
Run 10km, 4 laps straight out and back course the same as the cycle but the turn around point on Alexandra Parade is the cross Street of Mayfield Road. Again approx 700m you have Alex Hill to run up, once you hit the summit it is a downhill run onto the flats to the turn around point. Follow the same route back to the top of Alex Hill and straight down the Esplanade to the transition area or finish.

Pre Event Participation
|
|
You must ensure that you have trained sufficiently and are physically capable of completing the event within your current level of health and fitness. You must also ensure at all times during the event that you are performing well within your level of skill and ability for each of the three disciplines. To not abide by these conditions can create potentially dangerous situation for yourself and other competitors. |
Pre Event Training
|
|
When you are on the road cycling or running, remember the rules of the road. Do not ride two abreast on narrow road sections and obey all traffic rules. Being a competitor does not mean you are exempt or above the law. Be courteous to motorists and remember that wearing a helmet is compulsory in Queensland and police can issue on the spot fines for breach of this law. There are a number of training facilities available around the Maroochy Shire. - Click here for further information |
Competitor Registration
|
|
Registration for all competitors (except ITU World Cup competitors) will take place on Friday 4.00pm - 7.30pm 26th March 2009 and between 12pm - 3.30pm Saturday 27th March 2009 in the registration tent on Beach Terrace. IT IS COMPULSORY FOR ALL TRIATHLETES TO REGISTER AT THIS TIME.
You must show identification (Driver's Licence, Passport etc) to register and your Triathlon Australian Licence if you are a member. At the Registration tent, your name will be crossed off and you will be given your race kit containing Asics visor, Asics Singlet, Endura water bottle & bar, Triathlon Multi Sport Magazine and lots more. This kit is personalised for you and contains your chest number, bike security sticker, ID wristband, helmet sticker, Eyeline swim cap and timing band. Your ID wristband will be put on your wrist by a volunteer upon collection of your kit at Registration- your ID Wristband must be on your wrist at Race Start on Sunday - this is your identity throughout the race. You will also receive a written race briefing - please read this carefully as this is your only race briefing.
Teams will receive one timing band per team (ALL members must wear the timing band, passed from each team member like a relay baton) and race kits for each team member. No competitor will be accepted after Saturday 3.30pm and we cannot be responsible for you arriving late so allow for mishaps when making travel arrangements. It is only necessary for one team member to register for their team, however, they must be able to pass on the team kit to the other team members BEFORE race start.
Please note it is illegal for someone to race under your name or for you to race under someone else's - this will result in suspension from your State Triathlon Association and you are not insured while racing. |
Competitor Numbers & Race Singlet
|
|
Your race number is COMPULSORY on the run leg. Your official ASICS Mooloolaba Triathlon singlet is NOT COMPULSORY but we do appreciate you wearing it to support our sponsors. If you plan to use an elastic race number belt, then, as sponsors names are part of the race number, it will be necessary to ensure the complete race number is displayed. Competitors must ensure that their torso is covered throughout the cycle and run. TEAMS - only the runner is required to wear the chest number.
Please note that you will not be body marked. Therefore it is important to have your wristband securely fastened on your wrist on Sunday morning as you enter transition between 5.15 - 6.15am. All three team members must have their wristbands securely fastened on their wrist. You will not be allowed to compete without your wristband on. Your wristband is your identity throughout the race!
If you have problems of any kind, please proceed to the HELP DESK located at registration. |
Parking
|
|
As the transition is located on one of the main parking areas of Mooloolaba Esplanade parking close to the event arena is limited so please allow for plenty of time when arriving to the site. Please be aware all parking regulations will still apply throughout the Festival please refer to council parking signs for more details. There is no official event parking. |
Timing

Click here for Triathlon Queensland Race Competition Rules |
Penalties & Disqualifications
|
|
REMEMBER Triathlon Queensland officials will be in the transition area and out on the cycle course. Main points: cycle helmets fastened before unracking bike and unfastened after racking bike; no riding in transition area; upper torso must be covered; no drafting; no cheating. On the cycle leg there will be a GREEN ZONE from Buderim Ave Esplanade U-turn (900m from the finish) to the transition area - this means definitely no passing in this area due to safety reasons (this is a disqualification offence). |
Drafting / Blocking - Penalty Boxes
|
|
Drafting and/or blocking in addition to being dangerous is CHEATING. In 2008 the proven Penalty Box System was implemented in order to provide a safe and fair race environment. There will be 3 penalty boxes located on the bike course. The first will be at the 11km mark, the second at 21km at the Coolum cycle turnaround (northern end). The third will be at 37km at the Motorway off ramp. A competitor judged to be in a drafting or blocking situation will be shown a yellow card, at that point they carry on to the next Penalty Box on their side of the course where they will serve a 5 minute time penalty. Two or more yellow cards for drafting and/or blocking will result in disqualification. Competitors who do not stop at the first available Penalty Box and complete their time penalty are liable for disqualification from the race.
Drafting: The bike draft zone is a 3m x 7m rectangle, which surrounds every competitor's bicycle on the bike course. The front edge of the lead bicycle wheel defines the centre of the leading 3m edge of the rectangle. When a competitor enters this zone they have 15 seconds to pass another competitor and when a competitor has been passed they must drop back out of the drafting zone IMMEDIATELY.
Blocking: A competitor must not impede the forward progression of another competitor if they do so it is deemed to be blocking. All competitors must keep as close as possible to the left hand side of the road on the cycle course (even on closed courses). Riding on the right hand side of the course is classified as blocking.
PASSING ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE of another competitor is also an offence, even on a closed road.
NOTE: There will be no Stop/Go penalties for drafting and/or blocking infringements. |
Swim Course
|
|
SWIM COURSE:
- The Swim start line will be located 800m South from the ‘loo with a view’ so please allow 10min to walk to the start line.
- Competitors are to keep the swim start area clear. Swim warm-up if required must take place in the signed area to the right of the swim start.
- Dry swim start only, competitors in starting wave to assemble in marshalled area on beach. All competitors to be on beach by 6.30am for Race Briefing.

CUT OFF TIMES: All Swimmers will be able to complete the swim course.
TIDE PREDICTION: tbc

Team Competitors: Any team cyclists remaining in transition at 8.30am (To Be Confirmed) will be instructed to commence the cycle leg. All team swimmers will be able to finish the swim and make their way to the Teams Transition Area and hand the timing band to the team runner. Cycle Course
|
|
- To ensure an even race for all competitors you must rack your bike in your correct signed age group rack.
- NO DRAFTING - experienced draft busters will be on the course and penalty boxes will be in use.
- This is a one lap course, extreme care must be taken at all times. Take special care on entry to motorway; single file only as you approach the transition area; extreme caution on downhill approach.
- Timing is executed at the run exit.
- Drink plenty of water in preparation for the run leg.
- Upper torso must be covered at all times.
- Police are on the course, all road rules must be obeyed at all times (eg. crossing double white lines) - they will book anyone breaking the law. Follow police directions at all times.
|
Run Course
|
|
- Two lap run course in a clockwise direction then finish. The entire run is on road surface.
- Use aid station at each pass.
- WARNING - IF YOU DO NOT USE AID STATIONS AND TO CONTINUE TO RUN WHEN DEHYDRATED AND OVERHEATED, IT CAN BE DANGEROUS TO YOUR HEALTH.
CUT OFF:
From 11.15am (To Be Confirmed) all runners still on the course will be advised to move onto the footpath. Runners will be allowed to cross over the finish line until 11.20am (To Be Confirmed). After 11.20am (To Be Confirmed) any runners still on course will not be able to finish the event over the finish line, but will finish on the footpath.
If you feel you cannot meet this criteria, please contact us on 07 5449 0711 to discuss – there are no excuses if you don’t and then on the day you do not meet the cut off time! |
