| POST 2009 MOOLOOLABA TRIATHLON |
CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who took part in the 2009 Mooloolaba Triathlon Festival. What a huge success!
At last we had near perfect conditions for the Friday night ASICS Twilight 5km Run however the same can’t be said for Saturday’s The Courier-Mail Mooloolaba Superkidz Triathlon. What a fantastic effort from our potential future triathletes to participate in what can only be described as a “Queensland deluge”! The Mooloolaba Ocean Swim also had a few curve balls thrown at it with a change of venue and some pretty tough conditions yet competitors shone through and put on a fantastic display of fitness and determination. Saturday afternoon’s crowds were totally entertained by the Ryders Men and Women’s Cycling Grand Prix before Sunday’s battle of the best in both our age group and ITU triathlons.
Once again we saw record numbers of competitors across all the weekend’s events – the Mooloolaba Triathlon Festival just keeps getting bigger and better thanks to you.
Times have been posted for those competitors who competed in a timed event and for all your results please see below.

Once again congratulations and thank you for making the 2009 Mooloolaba Triathlon such an outstanding weekend.
Sweet Success for Sweetland
Canadian, Kirsten Sweetland made a stunning return to the race track last Sunday claiming victory in the opening round of the ITU World Cup in Mooloolaba from Beijing Olympic bronze medallist Emma Moffatt, who overcame nerves and registered her best ever result at this event while Switzerland’s Daniela Ryf claimed the final podium spot.
It is the first time an international has claimed victory at the Mooloolaba ITU World Cup, the win all the sweeter for Sweetland after an 18 month hiatus from racing. The win comes with an Australian touch - Sweetland has been training with Australian coach Shaun Stephens in Brisbane. Australia’s Emma Moffatt had to settle for second but was good enough to hold off a strong finishing Daniela Ryf from Switzerland.

He held off New Zealand’s Kris Gemmell who recorded the fastest run split to grab himself second place ahead of Australian Brad Kahlefeldt. Atkinson will take confidence from today's victory in the opening World Cup of the year into the innovative new series which will decide the 2009 world triathlon champion.

With the weather not behaving by producing wind and rain, it was no wonder that the VIP area at the Mooloolaba Tri was alive with activity. It was certainly the place to be with event partners and suppliers enjoying the prime position with other invited guests, athletes and local representatives.
Late Sunday morning wet lycra clad competitors told the story of their morning exploits while Emma Snowsill happily posed for photos and Troy Bayliss relaxed after competing in his first high level cycling race.
Thank you to all who attended and enjoyed the atmosphere and a big thanks to the volunteers that made the VIP section run so smoothly. |
