Kafka – (Melb) – Afro-beat/Funk/Soul

The music that came forth was instantly their own… It was dynamic, rhythmic, quirky & soulful!!! Kafka recently launched their debut self-titled album with a smashing Australian Tour. They entertained crowds in all the major capitals and set box office records…Musically they all share a prodigal competency for their instruments and an almost psychic ability to read each other’s minds when improvising. Their gig history is nothing short of impressive:- Woodford Folk Festival, Valley Fiesta, West End Festival, Brisbane International Film Festival and the list goes on… Relocating to Melbourne to expand their career and record their second album, Noosa will be the first to see them back in the sunny state in September in an exclusive 3 band line-up.

THE ROOFTOPS
Smell the rain, feel the earth, put your ear to the ground. This is where you’ll hear the sound of THE ROOFTOPS’ ; A fresh journey of barefooted sole searching and deep rooted grooves. It’s time to get dirty.
It’s been 3 years since the band’s highly successful debut album, ‘Storm Season’. The single, ‘Making Photographs’, received regular airplay on Triple J. ‘Roots and All’ presenter, Sarah Howells is quoted as saying that ‘THE ROOFTOPS are my favourite band of the summer.’
Since then the band has cultivated its fresh organic sound and uplifting vibes at the Bowery Bar, home to THE ROOFTOPS for the past 3 years straight. The band has recently carved up a Melbourne tour, and has also supported acts such as Bobby Flynn, King Farook, Rob Longstaff, and the Melodics.
Their ever evolving music invites listeners on an excursion through musical contours of revitalising soul, reggae, and funk grooves. A mature honesty is reflected in front man, Euan Gray’s captivating storytelling style. His timeless messages are complimented by solid backbeats, shimmers of spontaneous musical interaction, and just an overall feel-good vibe.
In any case, they have developed a distinctive sound that has impressed audiences from The Press Club to The Columbian to The Troubador and nationally on Triple J and the Nightlife dukebox network.
The sound is catchy, soulful and indisputably groovy, manifesting in energetic and epic live performances that motivate dance floors and good vibes. Fronted by vocalist and saxophonist Euan Gray, the original line up of keys (Steve Anning), now showcasing Peta Wilson, drums (Scott Nosworthy) and bass (McCoy Harvey) has now grown to include two more horns (Darren Skaar and Rafael Karlen). With all members coming from impressive jazz backgrounds, their shows build with cathartic intensity and spontaneity, yet their commitment to simple feel-good grooves never wavers.
Euan's 'fresh, bright and humourous lyrics' (Tsunami Magazine) expose a refreshing emotional depth amidst the stylish songwriting. This meaningfulness is not lost live.
Meanwhile, the predictions keep coming;
'A band most definately on the rise…move over Cat Empire' (Rave);
'Gray's knack with words will entice people' (Time-Off)
'I can't wait to see where these boys take it' (Sarah Howells, Triple J).
