The 2009/10 Gatorade Queensland Tri Series kicked off on Sunday with the first race of the series at Raby Bay. Once again the race proved to be a popular venue with over 1500 competitors turning up to take part in one of the three distances on offer.

Two of Australia’s leading age group athletes opened their season with convincing wins. 2008/09 Gatorade Series Champion Adam Fitzakerley took out the men’s race while World Triathlon Champion (20-24 years) Kirralee Seidel showed her class over a quality women’s field.

Fitzakerley exited the 400m swim with a small group containing the race favorites, Jason Crowther, brother Nathan Fitzakerley and Youngster Taylor Wood. It was Fitzakerley (Adam) and Crowther who led the 15km cycle and break away from the group.

It took a lightening quick run from Fitzakerley to get the edge over the group and claim the first win of the season, with Crowther and Woods securing the remaining two podium positions.

In the women’s race Kirralee Seidel claimed victory over Gold Coast’s 19-year old Courtney Gilfillan and Carrie Lester.

All of the girls exited the swim together with the addition of 15-year old Brigette Fisher. Once on the bike it was Lester who dominated as she headed back into T2 with a 30 second lead. With 1km left of the run Seidel and Gilfillan both passed Lester, with Seidel having more in her legs to claim the victory.

The second race of the series will head to Robina on the Gold Coast on Sunday November 15.

Points system:

• All club/squad members who participate will gain one (1) point for their squad/club.
• Those who finish in the top 5 in their respective category will also be awarded additional points to go towards their club's tally
• 5 points 1st place
• 4 points 2nd place
• 3 points 3rd place
• 2 points 4th place
• 1 point 5th place
• A bonus of 10 points will be up for grabs for ‘club spirit’, to be awarded for spectator support throughout the event.  

Prize:

• Official “Queensland Tri Series – Club Champs” inaugural trophy
• Gatorade product for club/squad training sessions (6 powder sachets - makes 108 litres in total)

It is up to the individual to add their club/squad name to the “Are you a member of a Club” field during entry process.
